When the Flood Brought Me a Friend

 I’ll never forget that day.

A brown pit bull, soaked to the bone and trembling, wrapped his muddy paws around my leg as if it were the only safe place left in the world.
It happened during a flood rescue. The water had swallowed everything—streets, houses, even hope. And then, through the chaos, I saw him—standing alone, chest-deep in the freezing current. Our eyes met, and in that instant, time seemed to stop.
He didn’t bark or growl. He just looked at me with eyes that pleaded, “Please... don’t leave me.”
I crouched down and reached out slowly. He hesitated, then suddenly leapt forward, pressing himself against me, clinging to me like I was the only solid ground left. His body shook with cold and fear, but beneath that tremble was trust—a fragile, desperate kind of trust.
Even after I pulled him onto the rescue raft, he wouldn’t let go. When we finally reached dry land, his paw stayed on my leg, as if releasing it might make everything disappear again. I whispered, “You’re safe now, buddy. You’re safe.”
No one came to claim him. Maybe he once had a home, or maybe he was abandoned. I’ll never know. But from that day on, he became part of mine.
I named him Diesel.
Now Diesel never leaves my side. He sleeps by my bed, walks by my heel, and sometimes—just like that first day—he’ll rest his paw on my leg, as if to make sure I’m still there.
